Spring Daffs at The Cherrybrook

Wild Birds at The Cherrybrook

We have been encouraging the birdlife with food and currently have a crowd of young Siskins eating us out of house and home!  Competing with them for the birdseed are Chaffinches, Coal Tits, Greenfinches and a pair of Sparrows.  The Blackbirds nested early and their young have fledged.  The Starlings nested in the eaves of the house but one of their young was caught by a Sparrow Hawk. Noisy Jackdaws hop around looking for scraps, and Cuckoos can be heard in the surrounding trees.

The Swallows nested in an ancient Swallow's nest in the old stables - not used last year, and we can now see some beaks peeping over the edge.  There are also House Martins swooping around with the Swallows, catching flies. We have seen a Common Redstart on the garden wall, and frequently spot a Buzzard in the distance on the field wall.  A Yellowhammer visited recently, and families of Great Tits and also Blue Tits can be heard demanding food from their busy parents.  Our birds are very fortunate in that we have no cats!

Further afield, Dave almost stumbled upon a Meadow Pipit's nest (see photo above) and recently flushed a pair of Mallards and a Heron from the nearby Cherry Brook.  This Heron photo was taken by one of our guests last year in the front meadow.

Earlier in the year we saw our first ever Brambling on the bird feeder and they became constant visitors for several weeks. The male (bottom right) and female (top left) can be seen on our photo, together with Siskins and a Chaffinch.

We have a vacancy for a twin room for New Year's Eve

We had a full house at The Cherrybrook for our Christmas Break but we have a vacancy for New Year's Eve.  You can either join us for our 3 Night New Year Gourmet Break or come just for our New Year's Eve Dinner, Bed & Brunch.

On New Year's Eve we are offering our Seven Course Gastronomic Extravaganza, served in a party atmosphere with Champagne at Midnight.  The following morning start the New Year with a late Brunch followed by a guided walk over the moors.

The 3 Night New Year Break also includes a 4-course dinner on New Year's Day and another on Sunday January 2nd, not to mention full farmhouse breakfasts on the following mornings.

Christmas at The Cherrybrook

We are delighted to say that all of our guests arrived safely at The Cherrybrook on Christmas Eve where they were greeted with a welcome drink of mulled wine followed by a 4-course dinner.

On Christmas morning they awoke to a glorious sunrise over the snow covered moors and at lunch time enjoyed a traditional six course Christmas lunch featuring our speciality three bird roast, comprising goose stuffed with turkey and pheasant.

Although the snow prevented any serious walking over the weekend the sun shone throughout and the combination of snow and sun provided some spectacular views and a continuous photo opportunity.

Combestone Room Now Fully Refurbished

We have just finished refurbishing Combestone (some of you may know it affectionately as Room 4) and it now boasts an en-suite with a new power shower, glass shower cubicle and modern white sanitary units! The bedroom has also received a complete redecoration.  This room is now up to the standard of our superior rooms, but it remains a standard room at £39.50 per person per night (the same as in 2009!) and is almost certainly the best value room at The Cherrybrook.

Christmas Preparations at The Cherrybrook

Our preparations for Christmas are almost complete at The Cherrybrook.

After a couple of anxious days looking at the snow and the weather forecasts, wondering whether we could get our necessary deliveries for Christmas, and more importantly, if our guests would be able to get here - today we began to relax just a little!

All our expected deliveries arrived on time this morning, with meat & poultry from Tavistock, bakery from Okehampton and fresh fruit & veg from just across the Tamar - Saltash, Cornwall.  I even managed a trip to the Dartmoor Brewery to collect some beer!

With sunshine forecast for the next 3 days we are hopeful that all our guests will be able to get here safely and will enjoy their Christmas at The Cherrybrook.

Spectacular Dartmoor from The Cherrybrook

We awoke yesterday to about 7 inches of snow and traffic at a standstill throughout almost the whole of Devon.  But as the day progressed things gradually got back to normal with snowploughs and gritters a very welcome sight as they passed up and down the main east west route across Dartmoor, just at the bottom of our drive.

Today we had glorious sunshine all day, with the most beautiful blue skies contrasting against the glistening white of the snow.  Again the gritters plied up and down the road and we also managed to clear the full 100 yards of our drive to enable customers and deliveries alike an easy access.

The views that greeted us all day were truly spectacular.

Our 2011 Brochure is Now Available

We are very pleased that our 2011 Brochure for The Cherrybrook is back from the printers and is now available. You will be pleased to hear that we have held the price of all of our 3 and 4 Night Special Dartmoor Breaks to the same price as 2010 and that all our standard rooms will be at 2009 prices! In addition we will absorb the VAT increase due in January 2011 to ensure that you get the best possible value during 2011.
